The
reality about computer skills
Everyone assumes that we
all know how to use a computer effectively.
The reality is that the majority of us have taught ourselves,
with help from friends and work colleagues and some on-the-job training.
Most of us have gaps in our computer skills, whether we realise
it or not!
Even if we do
realise that we have a problem, who wants to admit they are struggling?
If we “don’t know what we don’t know”, how do we know
what we need to learn?
New Zealand
organisations invest large amounts of money in technology – but not in
training people to use it productively.
As a result we only use a fraction of its potential.
There is
substantial planned investment in fast broadband, potentially providing
great advantages for New Zealand organisations – but only if we have
the skills and knowledge to be able to take advantage of the
opportunities presented.
We need to
improve our productivity to achieve the growth that New Zealand needs,
yet we waste huge amounts of time trying to solve basic computer
problems or completing tasks on our computers in long-winded round-about
ways.
New Zealand’s
productivity is leaking out through the holes in our computer skills.
Understanding how to use a computer and key software is as
important as reading and writing. Technology
is now a vital part of our personal and business lives so we all need to understand how to take the best advantage of it.
